Pleurisy Root was used before the Europeans arrived in America and have been found to have excellent effects on conditions of the lungs. As its name suggests, Pleurisy Root has been a very valuable herb in the treatment of pleurisy. Pleurisy Root has also been considered to be an herbal cold remedy and is a fine expectorant. It also has been used to promote sweating, which is helpful for cooling down the body and reducing burning fevers. It is also believed to be useful for increasing urine secretions which can be very helpful for expelling toxins from the kidneys. It has also been used traditionally for the treatment of blood poisoning, poisonous bites, and stings. Pleurisy root tincture can be very helpful for female disorders, and the extract might have some of the same effects as estrogen, however, it isn't as strong as estrogen pills. Externally, it is said to help remove warts.
Pleurisy root is one of the best-known plant expectorants and is often used in herbal medicine to treat many inflammatory diseases of the lungs including pleurisy, pneumonia, whooping cough, and other pulmonary and respiratory ailments. It has also been known to release spasms from the airways. It not only eases the pain associated with these types of illness by helping to make breathing easier, but it also loosens and removes phlegm from the respiratory tract. The use of this herb may provide relief of a dry cough, nasal blockage, and throat problems. Pleurisy is also used for wet coughs that are due to upper respiratory tract infections. It is often used in conjunction with Mullein, Horehound, Yerba santa, Coltsfoot, Cayenne, Lobelia, or Elecampane, which are also believed to be excellent expectorants for clearing excess mucus and fluid in the lungs.
Considered to be good for the digestive system, though not often used for this purpose, it has been used to relieve indigestion, intestinal cramping, vomiting and nausea, gas and flatulent colic. Historically, Pleurisy Root has applications that have included treatment for dysentery and diarrhea. It has been called an effective antispasmodic that may ease the pain associated with difficult menstrual cycles.
Pleurisy Root, as a diaphoretic, is thought to promote perspiration and sweating, and herbalists have used it to cool the body and reduce fevers that accompany colds and flu, scarlet fever, rheumatic fever, bilious fever, low typhoid states, measles and other eruptive and burning fevers.
Pleurisy root tincture in a tea can also be used topically for swellings, bruises, lameness, wounds and skin ulcers. It has also been used externally to help remove warts, poisonous bites, and stings.
