Oregon Grape is a valuable herb and has been helpful in purifying the blood and used extensively in herbal remedies for infections and to improve digestion and liver functions. It acts a bitter tonic to stimulate the flow of bile and intestinal secretions. Oregon grape extracts are often used for conditions such as jaundice, hepatitis, and general gastrointestinal dysfunction. Herbalists recommend it as an eyewash, though it needs to be highly diluted for this purpose, and as a vaginal douche, or topically for a skin wash. Oregon grape extracts are known for their strengthening properties for the digestive system. It is known to work effectively against many symptoms of 'damp heat' such as abdominal fullness and distention, feeling of heaviness, bouts of nausea, odorous loose stools, and for low appetite. It has been used to stop diarrhea, and in large doses it is an effective laxative. Studies have also claimed that its antibacterial activity has countered such important germs as E.coli and N. meningitides, among others. The herb is known to stimulates the flow of bile, which can loosen stools and help to prevent and sometimes relieve diverticulitis, gallbladder conditions and hemorrhoids.The root of Oregon grape may also be helpful for those who suffer from constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Studies in China show that an alkaloid contained in the root extract, called berbamine, helps to protect the bone marrow and promotes its recovery from chemotherapy and radiation therapy, for cancer patients. Combined with the bitter digestive-strengthening properties, the herb has an interesting and distinctive combination of properties.
Oregon Grape extracts are believed to be useful in the treatment of colds and other infections. Oregon Grape root, used internally and externally, is found to be very effective for preventing and reducing psoriatic lesions. As an antibacterial, it has been found to be helpful in treating various skin problems, such as acne, boils, rashes and syphilitic ulceration. Oregon grape root tinctures are made active by at least two alkaloids, berbamine, and berberine. Berbamine is an antihistamine, antibacterial, immune booster, and anti-dandruff. Acne is caused by bacteria and this can kill bacteria on contact. Better yet, Oregon grape can help with inflammation when used orally and topically.
Like all chronic diseases, this can be a consumptive process. It is less effective for treating eczema, a certain percentage of cases will be cleared up. If it is going to make any difference in eczema, it will happen in three months of use. Any treatment should be used on a daily basis for at least three months to see if it is having any effect on the condition.

Contraindications: Berberine-containing plants (Barberry, Oregon-Grape, Goldenseal, etc.) should not be used by pregnant or nursing women. Those who suffer from hyperthyroid conditions should not take Oregon Grape, and diabetics should use Oregon-Grape only under the supervision of a physician. There is some evidence that berberine may interfere with the efficacy of tetracycline medications. High doses (many times the recommended amount) may cause vomiting, lowered blood pressure and lowered heart rate, lethargy, nosebleed, skin, eye, and kidney irritation. Do not take Oregon-Grape Root if you have chronic diarrhea, a duodenal ulcer or excessive stomach acid, as it could make these conditions worse. Oregon Grape root is not recommended for prolonged use.
