Goldenrod has a long history of medicinal uses in both North America and Europe but has been used most often for the bladder and urinary system, for its astringent and antiseptic qualities. This herbal remedy often times takes the rap for the ragweed plant, but the Goldenrod is actually an antidote for the seasonal ragweed allergies and may help calm symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, and watery eyes. The herbal tincture has also been used for symptoms of the common cold and other viral infections for calming the symptoms and releasing the sweat during a fever. Goldenrod has also been used to relieve intestinal gas pain and distension (this has been validated by pharmacists for this use), and it is said to be very good for flatulent dyspepsia (often associated with nervous tension). Goldenrod is a good source of the constituent rutin, which is a powerful flavonoid that benefits the cardiovascular system, as well as increases capillary strength. As an antifungal, the plant extract has been used as an alternative for the treatment of Candida type yeast infections. The Latin name, Solidago, means to make whole and has often been infused with
Plantain, Yarrow, and St. John's Wort in a wound healing salve and it also makes a nice rub for aches and pains of joints and muscles.
Goldenrod has often been associated with helping to relieve symptoms of the common cold and flu, and similar ailments of the respiratory system as well as digestive issues. It is believed to be a very effective remedy for hay fever, and its antiseptic and antimicrobial properties make it a good choice for sore throats. As an expectorant, it has been used to clear mucous easily from the lungs and has been proven to be useful as an herbal treatment for pneumonia, pleurisy, laryngitis, and pharyngitis. The diaphoretic property of Goldenrod helps to open the pores of the skin to release sweat during a fever and is considered to be an excellent internal cleanser for preventing and clearing infections.
Goldenrod leaf is believed to have a higher content of antioxidants than green tea! There are many things that our body needs to stay healthy, and the antioxidants and saponins contained in the herb may help to remove the toxins in the body that may cause various forms of disease.
Goldenrod has been used traditionally as an approach to diabetes, gout, and arthritis. Combined with
Dandelion and
Willow Bark it may provide remarkably effective pain relief. Goldenrod's most profound use tends to be directly on the muscles, healing pulled muscles in a shorter period of time. It is used to relieve sore neck muscles, generally loosening them and relieving the tension. Researchers have found that the anti-inflammatory activity of Goldenrod was comparable to a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is often prescribed for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Goldenrod, or Solidago, is most commonly used as an aquaretic agent, meaning it promotes the loss of water from the body and increases water release without the loss of electrolytes (compared to a diuretic that promotes the loss of both water and electrolytes). It is used frequently in Europe and is considered to be a safe and gentle herbal remedy that may help to get rid of different toxins that may get stuck in the urinary system. Goldenrod has received recognition for its ability to treat UTI's and to prevent or flush out kidney and bladder stones. People who frequently experience a UTI may want to consider adding this herb as part of their diet, to help improve the overall health of the urinary tract. It is most effective when used with the herbal tinctures of
Hawthorn,
Agrimony, and
Thyme.
Goldenrod is used to elevate testosterone levels and increase blood flow to the penis. It is an excellent herb for prostate inflammation and is an excellent lymphatic and depurative. While Goldenrod does contain some ingredients that have been shown to increase stamina and libido, on the whole, this is a fairly standard blend. Some studies have shown, however, that Goldenrod has anti-tumor properties to help fight against prostate tumors.
Goldenrod has saponins, that are antifungal and act specifically against Candida fungus which is the cause of vaginal and oral thrush. Goldenrod is thought to be helpful in inhibiting yeast infections, including Candida albicans. It may be used in a douche or mouthwash in the treatment of these types of infections. When treating yeast infections, modern herbalists usually include
Sage.
Solidago means "to make whole" and Goldenrod's bioflavonoids help to provide power to the veins and have often been indicated in herbal medicine for varicose veins and venous insufficiency. Topical preparations have been used for slow healing wounds, cuts, ulcers, skin lesions and even first degree burns.
