Dong Quai, sometimes called "Female Ginseng," is an old, natural way to support a woman's health and reproductive system. It is thought to relieve the discomforts of menopause (hot flashes, vaginal dryness and mood swings) and premenstrual syndrome (PMS), dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), menorrhagia (abnormal menstruation), prolapsed uterus, and has been used to regulate monthly cycles in women after giving birth or when ending the use of birth control pills. It has been purported to help with angina, arthritis, kidney disease, nerve pain, abdominal pain, pulmonary hypertension and menstrual migraines. The root, Dong quai or Dang gui, is valuable in treating anemia, for clearing liver stagnation, of both energy and toxins, and for the relief of constipation, especially in the elderly. In Asian cultures, especially China and Japan, it is second only to ginseng in its popularity.
Substantial pharmacological research has validated the properties in Dong Quai to be anti-cramping, hypotensive, antiasthmatic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antiarthritic. It has also been shown to be effective against several strains of microorganisms, especially fungi such as Candida albicans, the primary cause of vaginal yeast infections. The constellation of all the properties of Dong quai extracts properties might explain the plant's sometimes dramatic effect on PMS symptoms.
Angelica has a powerful action on women's reproductive system and has been used by women to promote menstruation and to terminate a pregnancy. Angelica, or Dong quai, will bring on delayed menstruation 60% of the time if it is no more than two weeks overdue. After the delivery of a child, Dong quai has been used as a post-partum tonic that helps to regulate the menses and build the blood. Midwives have used Dong quai tincture after childbirth to stimulate the release of a retained placenta. As a uterine tonic, it promotes an increase in contractions followed by a prolonged relaxation. It is believed to reduce pain associated with endometriosis, especially when used in combinations with other natural herbs like Chasteberry or Vitex. Women have found more effective control over menopausal symptoms using Dong quai, for hot flashes, vaginal dryness, mood swings and when it is used with Black Cohosh.
Dong Quai increases blood flow to the heart, brain, and extremities, and the compounds in Dong Quai appear to impede blood clotting, improving overall circulation, thereby helping to guard against stroke and heart attack. Dong quai is said to possess significant blood pressure-lowering action, due to its ability to dilate blood vessels, and it is also reported to possess calcium channel blockers, which help a wide variety of cardiovascular conditions, including hypertension, arteriosclerosis, and angina. Dong quai is said to support improved immune function and a support for healthy blood and cardiovascular function.
Both men and women use Dong quai as a tonic to cleanse and purify the blood, as it promotes better circulation and helps to improve brain stimulation and alertness. As a blood purifier, Dong quai helps to promote better blood circulation throughout the body and to the brain; and improved circulation may help to relieve tinnitus, blurred vision, palpitations, blurred vision, migraines and headaches due to blood deficiency or constipation. For eye disorders, Dong quai contains compounds that are said to keep blood vessels in the eye from leaking and causing swelling in the retina, and they are also thought to impede the formation of blood clots that may occur in the eye.
If you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, it is probably because your immune system has gone amok and has begun attacking the healthy cells. These attacks cause pain and swelling in the joints. Dong quai works naturally to reduce histamine and inflammation of joint swelling associated with rheumatism, as well as to lessen the embarrassment and discomfort of skin conditions, including psoriasis, eczema, and vitiligo.
Dong Quai has alleviated sleeplessness, or insomnia, in both sexes. Studies claim that it is a tranquilizer and will calm the nerves. It is also said to have pain-relieving effects; and its analgesic activity, combined with its smooth-muscle relaxing properties, support its historical use in easing the discomforts in conditions such as trauma, abdominal pain, and cramps.
Antibacterial activity is attributed to Dong Quai, and it has shown some antibiotic effects against several bacteria, such as E-coli, strep, and Shigella, in laboratory studies.
