Knowledge about Alum root's curative powers is as ancient as Ayurveda itself. A powerful astringent and antiseptic, Alum root, or Cranesbill, has been used to heal diseases of the oral cavity as well as treat vaginal and gynecological disorders. It effectively treats throat afflictions, heals wounds and has potent anti-toxic abilities. Also as an external cleanser, it has been successful in controlling profuse bleeding by ensuring blood clotting. It also benefits those who carry the herpes virus, leucoderma, and tuberculosis. Cranesbill has been used for centuries in the treatment of diarrhea, cholera, Crohn's disease, Bright's disease, canker sores, dysentery, and hemorrhage, including bleeding gums after tooth extraction and excessive menstruation. Internally it can be used for treating bleeding ulcers, internal piles, and hemorrhoids. Native Americans used Alum root extracts for its drying properties to combat diarrhea.
Due to its tannin content, it is considered a very powerful astringent, causing skin and mucous membranes to constrict and has been used to heal the gastrointestinal tract. Although uncommon in the Western world, Alum extract is used successfully in treating dysentery and cholera infantum. The tannins in Cranesbill extract act chemically by binding protein cells closer together than they would naturally be. Not only do they dry out the gastrointestinal tract, they also destroy bacteria, and if diarrhea is caused by bacteria, using Cranesbill has the added benefit of getting rid of the source of your problem. For internal ulcers, Alum root works very well to help heal, clean and stop the bleeding of the ulcer. It has been recommended in combination with a small amount of Cayenne to tone and reactivate the weakened stomach of heavy drinkers and has been used for children and for adults with sensitive stomachs.
Commonly called the Alum Root, it can be used in a mouthwash to kill germs in the mouth and is used on sores and bleeding of the gums as well as to arrest bleeding after a tooth extraction. Cranesbill tincture, with its astringent properties, is used as a styptic to stop bleeding for all kinds of hemorrhages from simple nosebleeds and profuse menstruation and for more serious internal bleeding. Externally, it has been applied as a poultice to open wounds and minor hemorrhages to reduce bleeding, i.e. nosebleeds.
Cranesbill has a potent healing effect and is an excellent treatment against pus and mucus in the bladder and intestines or, in fact, mucous discharges from any part of the body. It is helpful in reducing inflammation of the mucous membranes, and curbs irritation of hemorrhoidal tissue. It has been used with Bistort and Marshmallow Root to ease the discomfort of hemorrhoids and internal piles. It is also known to promote venous health.
It is especially known for its ability to beautify the skin and is often used to alleviate the irritation of skin allergies and shaving. Alum tincture is also used in depilatory waxes because of its soothing properties.
As an antiseptic mouthwash, Cranesbill root will aid in the relief of mouth sores, sore throat, and bleeding gums. Considered a powerful antiseptic and effective antibacterial, Cranesbill has also been found helpful in fighting leukorrhea and the bacteria associated with tuberculosis. It will also help in the fight against body odor and so makes a great deodorant.
