Indians on the western coast used this herb as a general painkiller, and interestingly enough, Indian women would also add this to the food of their “unreactive” mates if a pregnancy was desired. California Poppy is a gentle sedative, analgesic, and antispasmodic. California poppy is a member of the poppy family and distantly related to the opium poppy, Papaver somniferum. California poppies contain some sedative alkaloids, but do not contain real “opium”. The most common uses for California Poppy tincture is for treating the various physical and psychological conditions including insomnia, incontinence or bedwetting, anxiety and nervous tension, even in children. Because of the sedative properties, it has also been used in the treatment of behavioral disorders such as ADD and ADHD in children and young adults. Additionally, this herbal extract has also been proven to improve intellectual capacity, memory, and concentration in the elderly. California poppy extract was used by American Indians to relieve tooth pain and the tincture’s antimicrobial properties help when applied externally to cuts and scrapes. As an analgesic and antispasmodic, Poppy has been found to be useful in the relief of acute nerve and muscle centered aches and pains. It has been used as a remedy in cases of fever, rapid pulse, and spasmodic cough. As an external wash, it may be used for suppressing lactation, or the production of milk, in women who are breastfeeding. It has also been used externally in the treatment of head lice with the same effectiveness of Berberis repens, or Barberry.
This amazing plant is a sedative extraordinaire, used in cases of anxiety, insomnia, and nervous tension. Current studies are underway to examine the California Poppy plant extract’s wide array of activity from its ability to aid in nervous and behavioral disorders such as hyperactivity, ADD, and ADHD, for the improvement of memory in young and old, concentration and intellectual capacity. An herbal combination including California poppy is also used for sleep and mood disturbance associated with strong, warm wind in the Alps (foehn illness).
The compounds contained in California poppy are known as alkaloids, and they may act like benzodiazepines, such as Valium® (diazepam). These compounds also help relieve muscle spasms, anxiety, nervousness, and insomnia. It greatly assists in helping people to fall asleep and stay asleep, which helps to improve sleep quality. Unlike benzodiazepines, however, they do not seem to produce any anti-seizure activity. Most importantly, California poppy extracts do not seem to be addictive or habit-forming, unlike opium poppy. As an anxiolytic, California Poppy should be taken in small doses, combined with herbs such as Skullcap, or Scullcap tincture. Both herbs are excellent allies when coping with the pain and restlessness of addiction withdrawal symptoms. When used in higher doses California poppy acts as a sedative, inducing a drowsy feeling and driving or operating machinery should be avoided under its influence.
Pain, such as intestinal colic, rheumatism, toothaches, and earaches, may benefit from higher doses of California poppy. It is sometimes recommended in combination with Valerian root for a stronger effect. More recently, Eschscholzia californica has been used in the treatment of heroin addiction and withdrawal. It can also be used as a pain reliever for headaches, neuralgia, and minor aches and pains. California poppy tinctures may also be taken to alleviate intestinal and menstrual cramps and to relieve tension.
California poppy extract does not contain opiates and does not have the same addictive qualities as the red poppy. It is considered to be effective for children with stomach cramps, muscle aches and for those who have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. A natural hypnotic, it prepares you for peaceful sleep, reduces sleep problems, and more particularly, nightmares. It has also been found to be effective for children who wet the bed and for incontinence in adults. California poppy has also been recognized for emotional and mental stability and for enhancing vitality and surrounding the heart with warmth, providing self-acceptance and self-awareness for those who are self-conscious about themselves.
