The extract of Grapefruit seed was first documented in 1972 by Dr. Jacob Harich, who noticed its traditional use as a disinfectant. Grapefruit seed extract is extremely anti-microbial, meaning they fight against bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites, and will not allow them to thrive. Also high in vitamin-C content, it has been used to strengthen the immune system and naturally aids the body to rid itself of toxins and to neutralize free-radicals making it a wonderful antioxidant that helps to ward off colds, and other viruses and possibly even malignant disease. It is believed to actually work like an antibiotic drug, without destroying the helpful bacteria that are normally present. It is used to treat a myriad of ailments including bad breath, plaque, sore throat, coughs, athlete's foot, yeast infection, jock itch, thrush, HPV, herpes, insect bites/stings even gastric ulcers. It also assists the body's cholesterol levels increasing healthy HDL and reducing LDL (bad cholesterol). Grapefruit seed can strengthen hair and even pets can benefit from the herbal extracts healing properties for external injuries and internal bacteria and fleas.
A study done in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that Grapefruit seed extract is effective in killing over 800 bacterial and viral infections, 100 strains of fungus and a large number of single and multi-celled parasites. No other naturally-occurring antimicrobial comes close to these results. It has been used internally and externally to ease traveler's diarrhea caused by bacteria and to help handle the drug-resistant Enterococcus faecalis, formerly known as Streptococcus, as well as, Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, Salmonella, Klebsiella, Proteus, herpes simplex 1, measles, and cholera.
Grapefruit seed extract, or GSE, has very high amounts of disease-fighting, free radical eliminating antioxidants and phytonutrients called bioflavonoids. One of these antioxidants is hesperidin, a well-known immune system stimulator, and booster. Another great herbal benefit of Grapefruit seed extract is that it possesses other anti-cancerous agents like lycopene, vitamin C, sterols, tocopherols, citric acid and other trace minerals, which are believed to help, even along with conventional treatments, in various types of cancer like breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer. Another important application for GSE extract is in the support and protection of individuals with chronic immune system problems such as AIDS, Chronic fatigue, HIV, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).
Grapefruit seed extract consumption has a natural alkalizing effect on the body and it also provides the body with antioxidants which prevent aging. For optimum health, acidic and alkaline levels of the body need to be in equilibrium. Most degenerative diseases are associated with one's pH. pH balance is an important factor in overcoming a serious illness and maintain good health. Most of the diseases cannot exist in an alkaline environment.
Grapefruit seed extract is one of the best treatments for acidity and relieves indigestion, heartburn and acid reflux. The extract is said to be especially helpful in intestinal and colon infections, inhibiting infection while correcting the balance of intestinal flora and encouraging the growth of healthy bacteria. The biotin in its vitamin-B content is helpful in efficiently eliminating body fats. Sometimes called the "Fat Melting Fruit," by facilitating the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
Grapefruit seed is capable of preventing acute pancreatic damage induced by ischemia/reperfusion, which is known to result from the reduction of the antioxidative capability of pancreatic tissue. This protective action can help to improve pancreatic blood flow. People suffering from diabetes can greatly benefit because it aids in flushing out sweets and starches that accumulate in the body. If you have a history of diabetes in the family, consuming Grapefruit seed herbal tincture could be a good way of helping to prevent the onset of the disease.

It may be used internally by adding 2-3 ml of the herbal extract to one pint of water as a douche for up to one week, in the treatment of yeast infections. It may also be used by adding 4 to 5 drops in a glass of water for treating thrush. Nail fungus may be treated by adding 7 to 10 drops to a tablespoon of water and applying the solution over and under the nail and cuticles. You may also use a cotton swab or Q-tip and apply the diluted extract to nipples and areolas for infection.
