Culver's root is a native North American plant that is well established in Native American herbal medicine. In the Southern U.S., it is still used extensively as a tonic for the stomach and a blood purifier. Also known as Black root, it promotes perspiration, relieves gas and promotes bile flow from the gallbladder. It also acts as a liver tonic and has been used to treat symptoms of hepatitis, for pain around the liver area, jaundice, and accompanying depression. It was formerly used to treat malaria and other fevers. Culver's extract has also been used effectively for diarrhea, chronic constipation, indigestion, syphilitic impurities, sallow complexion and dull frontal headaches.
Culver's root is an excellent bowel cleaner helps to expel old debris from the bowel, that has a mild action without causing the depression of physical strength common with many purgative medicines. And as a stomach tonic, it helps with indigestion and other disorders of the stomach. Culver's is especially helpful to the vital area of the small intestine for congested conditions, such as colon congestion and dysentery. Culver's root is also a vermicide and is used to kill parasitic intestinal worms and parasites in general. Taken with Fennel, it has been used for alleviating flatulence and with Dandelion root and Barberry root bark for balancing acid and antacid activities.
Culver's Root is also an old-time remedy that has been found to be a mild, gentle relaxant and tonic for the liver. Culver's root has a relaxant effect on the body that helps to remove liver congestions with accompanying constipation, in a mild way. Culver's Root has also been used as a treatment for jaundice due to liver congestion and hepatitis. It is an excellent blood purifier and helps to cleanse the mucous membranes helpful with tenderness and heavy pain in the hepatic region, when the tongue is coated markedly white, the skin is yellow or sallow, there is a bitter taste, cold extremities, nausea and dull frontal headache; thirst, with inability to drink; restlessness, with insomnia, diarrhea and accompanying mental depression. Culver's root is a stimulant and is sometimes used for gallbladder inflammation.
