Whether you have gallstones or other stressors on your Gallbladder certain herbs may help support the organ in different ways. Some of the herbs are also thought to improve liver function and help eliminate waste products to improve the stamina and performance of your gallbladder. Gallbladder disease generally originates in the liver, when there is an occurrence of gallstones in the bile ducts, which eventually leads to the development of fibrous tissue. Cholesterol, bile salts and calcium comprise gallstones, but the main underlying cause is excess cholesterol. The extent of the damage that they have on the liver and its performance largely depends on the degree of obstruction caused by the gallstones. Cancer of the liver only occurs after many years of progressive blockage of the liver bile ducts. This also applies to tumors in the liver that emanate from primary tumors in the lungs, breasts or GI tract.
Certain bitter herbs are considered to be liver herbs because they stimulate, cleanse, and protect the liver and gallbladder. German research has shown that bitter tonic herbs stimulate bile and hydrochloric acid production. They also stimulate the nervous system and boost immune system function, as well as combat fatigue and exhaustion. Four commonly used bitter herbs that have been used traditionally in the medical community to support liver health, gallbladder health and other ailments are Dandelion, Oregon Grape Root, Rhubarb Root and Bayberry.
Dandelion root is a classic bitter liver tonic herb that stimulates digestion, and the liver to produce more bile. Studies have found that the Dandelion possesses the ability to reduce cholesterol, rheumatism, oxidative stress which contributes to atherosclerosis, and acts as a diuretic. Dandelion root extract has a mild laxative effect and is used for constipation. It also stimulates the appetite and has been found to be helpful for upset stomach and other digestive disorders. The University of Maryland Medical Center, UMMC, states that the dandelion may allow intestinal bacteria to flourish and function better. Dandelion root also acts as a liver detoxification, and while cleansing the liver may also cleanse the gallbladder.
Oregon grape root is an evergreen shrub and, despite its name, it is not related to the familiar fruit. It is rich in an anti-inflammatory phytochemical called berberine and is traditionally regarded as a liver cleanser and blood purifier. Oregon grape increases blood circulation to the liver which stimulates the production of bile. It has astringent, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, choleretic, cholagogue, and vulnerary properties that promote the healing of irritated tissue. Oregon grape is a member of the Barberry family, which has been used to help stimulate the liver and reduce liver congestion. Oregon grape root extracts astringent properties have bitter, drying and cooling tendencies. This wonderful herb is a favorite among dermatologists and is found to be useful as a treatment for acne and other skin conditions.
Turkey Rhubarb Root is considered an "alterative" or an agent that helps to gradually and favorably alter the course of an ailment or condition. It helps the body to modify the process of nutrition and excretion and restores normal bodily function. This process acts to cleanse and stimulate the efficient removal of waste products from the system. The bitter principle included in Turkey Rhubarb root tincture is said to stimulate good digestion and improve the appetite. It is also considered a "stomachic" that relieves gastric disorders and gives tone and strength to the stomach. Rhubarb extract is thought to be particularly effective in treating atonic dyspepsia and has also been found to be useful for its anti-microbial properties to treat internal pinworms, threadworms, and ringworms. Rhubarb root is used for irregularity following treatment with antibiotics and the anthraquinones have been shown to have virucidal activity against HSV I, measles, viral infections and stubborn infections of the skin caused by Staphylococcus aureus.
Yellow Dock root can be a valuable herb for treatment of constipation or other digestive issues. If you suffer from digestive issues or stomach acid deficiencies, Yellow dock root extract can be a helpful dietary addition. Digestive problems can prevent your body from getting enough protein and minerals. Commonly the herbal remedy has been used for its laxative properties and to promote the flow of bile from the liver and gallbladder, which appears to facilitate the absorption of minerals. Like Dandelion root has been found to be useful for acne and other skin conditions. It is thought to be a blood purifier and general detoxifier, especially for the liver. The herb, Rumex Crispus or Yellow Dock root, is high in antioxidants that are beneficial for slowing down oxidative damage. Antioxidants are nutrient power-ups that fight against damaging free radicals that attack the body's systems and can lead to cellular damage, aging or inflammation.
The early American colonists found the
Bayberry tree growing throughout the East, but they used it for fragrant candles instead of medicine. In folk medicine, it was used internally as a tea for its tonic and stimulant properties, and in the treatment of diarrhea, fever, and dysentery. Recent studies have highlighted several potentially useful chemical compounds in Bayberry root bark extract that have been found to influence sodium and potassium metabolism. The flavonoid, myricitrin, acts as a choleretic and stimulates bile flow and acts as an active antibiotic. The astringency is thought to help with intestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic gastritis internal ulcerations and mucous colitis.
Lobelia leaf, Lobelia inflata, is considered an effective antispasmodic and was commonly used by American physicians at the turn of the century for spasms in the body and as a pain-reliever. Lobelia contains various compounds that exhibit anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and relaxant activity. Lobelia is also noted for stimulating the digestive fluids and has been used effectively for conditions such as stomach upset or blockage, the common cold, and asthma. It has also been helpful for smokers who want to "kick the habit". Lobelia leaf tincture may help to reduce or minimize spastic muscles linked to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and passing stones.
