This tree is native to the United States from Pennsylvania to Tennessee. Uses for the bark date back in history to Native Americans to treat headaches and to relieve anxiety. In the nineteenth century, physicians once used Fringe tree tinctures, called Chionia, for rheumatism relief and as a treatment of liver problems, nephritis, and jaundice. The root bark of Fringe Tree has been noted for its healing power for pain in the gall bladder and its ability to dissolve gallstones and for weak and tired bodies. Fringe Tree Bark has many of the same qualities as ginger, it works as a chologogue to increase bile flow. It has also been used internally against nausea, flatulence, loss of appetite, dyspepsia, catarrh, sea sickness, spleen enlargement, foot pain, respiratory, heart stimulant, impotence, and enteritis. In India, it is used as a body deodorizer and halitosis remedy. Fringe tree bark extract has been used in Europe and Asia as an aphrodisiac for centuries.
The benefits of Fringe tree bark have been proven effective in early medicine for gallbladder and liver ailments of all kinds. By stimulating the release of bile, it acts as a gentle and effective laxative. It also increases gastric secretion, increasing the release of bile and the pressure against the stones. And so it has been suggested to avoid it during an actual gallstone attack. The herb is also known to promote the effective digestion of fats in the body and actually correct excessive discharge of mucus in the gastrointestinal tract. In traditional medicine, it has been suggested for pancreatic disease and so may be of use in a regimen for the treatment of diabetes.
Fringe Tree Bark is often used as a liver and digestive aid. The actions of this herb are found to be of use for thinning and increase the flow of bile aiding the liver. With sufficient bile flow, fatty foods stop causing digestive problems and fat-soluble vitamins and other nutrients are thoroughly absorbed. The liver is no longer backed up by cholesterol, nor is the blood's circulation clogged by it. Fringe Tree, or Chionanthus, has been used safely for liver ailments, but in particular when it has developed into jaundice.
The Fringe tree bark extract has been used as a general glandular tonic for ill-defined ailments involving the kidneys and spleen. It acts as a cholagogue, diuretic and as a mild laxative. It also may help to reduce mild fevers. It's been said that it's "good for what ails you", and like other adaptogens, it is used to boost the body's natural defense mechanisms.
