Irritability is sometimes overlooked as a side effect of ADHD. Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata), nicknamed Maypop has been found to have analgesic (pain-killing) properties and can prevent sleeplessness caused by inflammation in the brain. Primary chemical constituents of Passion Flower herb include alkaloids, flavonoids, flavone glycosides, sterols, sugars, and gums. The flavonoids are responsible for its anti-anxiety and relaxing effects.
It has long been used for panic attacks, mild mood swings, nervous tension, hyperactivity, crying spells, irritability, restlessness, hysteria, and epilepsy. Passion Flower tinctures are used for sleep problems (insomnia), ADD, ADHD, gastrointestinal (GI), related to anxiety or nervousness, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and for relieving symptoms related to withdrawal from narcotic drugs.
Contraindications: Passionflower is generally considered to be non-toxic
when used in moderation. Pregnant and nursing women should not use Passion
Flower. Since it may cause sleepiness, it should not be used before driving or
operating machinery. Do not use Passion Flower if you take MAO
inhibitors, and it should not be taken with other prescription sedatives or
sedative herbs or alcohol, as it increases their sedative effects. Depression
of the nervous system may result in fatigue and mental fogginess if you take
too much for too long. Start with a low dose several times a day and you may
want to increase as you learn the effects, or how you respond to the extract.
Passion Flower may have an added anticoagulant effect.
Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) is an excellent herb because of its stimulating effect on the brain that increases one's ability to focus and experience clarity of mind, all the while relaxing. or reducing anxiety with a soothing effect on an overactive nervous system. The beneficial qualities of Gotu Kola extract make it an excellent herb for children with ADD and ADHD by improving attention span and concentration, sometimes within weeks of supplementation. In clinical studies it was shown to increase concentration in mentally retarded children, to increase the IQ, general abilities were increased, with improved behavioral patterns and expression, communication and co-operation.
Contraindications: Pregnant or nursing women should not take Gotu Kola. Since it
may interfere with prescription diabetes medications, a doctor should be
consulted before using. Those taking cholesterol-lowering medications should
not use Gotu Kola. Do not mix with tranquilizers, since it may have a narcotic
effect. It is not appropriate for people with epilepsy or for people who are
sensitive to light. The repeated topical application is not recommended. The
use of Gotu Kola for more than six weeks is not recommended. People taking the
herb for an extended period of time (up to six weeks) should take a two-week
break before taking the herb again.
American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolium), as well as, American Ginseng root, has real potential to replace amphetamines and other prescribed drugs used for ADD and ADHD. Ginseng is an adaptogen, which means it helps the body to adapt to stresses, whether they are mental or physical. In an open trial, Panax Ginseng extracts, had antidepressant effects on ADD and ADHD patients, improving on inattention, hyperactivity and immaturity factors. Panax Ginseng tincture has been shown to reduce tension, stress, and fatigue. It strengthens the immune system, increases motivation and also normalizes body function. Ginseng tinctures have also been used to balance blood sugar levels, lowers cholesterol, strengthens the heart muscle, and protects against radiation. Contraindications: Since American Ginseng stimulates fertility, it should be avoided by women in the first week after starting any new brand of oral contraceptives. It should be avoided by women who take prescription medications for which pregnancy is contraindicated, especially isotretinoin (Accutane). This product should not be taken by pregnant or nursing mothers. There may be possible interactions with blood thinners, i.e., Coumadin, aspirin, Plavix, and Ticlid. American Ginseng Herbal Supplement should not be taken by people with hypoglycemia, high blood pressure, heart disorders, asthma or insomnia without consulting a physician.
Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus), or Siberian ginseng, increases concentration, stimulates memory and increases work capacity. Siberian Ginseng root is an adaptogen, in that it normalizes bodily functions. It can combat stress by reducing the activity of the adrenal cortex. Eleuthero root is also an immune stimulant that is especially useful for preventing infection during times of intense physical activity or prolonged periods of stress.
Siberian Ginseng extracts provide energy and have been used for and it is also capable of neutralizing the negative effects of stress and improve symptoms of depression. Reportedly, it has been effective in the treatment of schizophrenia, depression, and attention deficit disorder, or ADD.
Contraindications: Men with prostate disorders should not use Eleuthero Root, as it
contains compounds that may stimulate testosterone production. Pregnant and nursing
women may use it but should avoid products that also contain Panax ginseng.
Anyone taking digoxin (Lanoxicaps, Lanoxin) should seek the advice of a
health-care professional before taking Eleuthero Root. Patients with
hypertension should not consume Siberian Ginseng. Rare side effects have been
reported: Insomnia, drowsiness, nervousness, tachycardia, headache,
hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemics should use caution, as ginseng lowers blood sugar
levels. People with high blood pressure should consult their doctor before
taking Eleutherococcus. May cause light sleep in some people. Users are
recommended not to take it in the evening. Do not take if you have heart
disease or high blood pressure.
Fo-ti Root has been shown to improve cardiovascular health, enhance immune function, slow the degeneration of glands, increase antioxidant activity and reduce the accumulation of lipid peroxidation. Scullcap, aka Skullcap and Ban Zhi Lian (Scutellaria lateriflora), is an excellent tonic for the nervous system. It contains flavonoids and minerals that work together reduce anxiety, restlessness and improve focus and may be helpful in treating your child's ADHD. Skullcap helps to induce an inner calm and to lessen negative mind chatter. Further studies have shown the herb's ability to inhibit muscle spasm and increase the body's blood supply.
Hops Flower (Humulus lupulus) has traditionally been used for nervous conditions and is a useful sleep inducer.
