Are you experiencing joint pain or do you have swollen joints? If so, then you might be suffering from arthritis. Osteoarthritis, the most common category of arthritis is mainly characterized by inflammation and pain in the joints. There are plenty of herbal remedies for reducing arthritic pain, this compound formula has been used to treat gout, rheumatism, and tendonitis. Yucca root, Yucca
filimentosa, has been used historically for easing symptoms associated with arthritis, bursitis, and gout.
It is believed that the saponins in
Yucca root extract disrupt the production of a certain chemical that prevents new cartilage growth. Once inhibited, the body can produce more cartilage in the joints. Yucca root tincture also has anti-inflammatory properties that can aid in reducing the swelling and, in turn, pain associated with these ailments. One study found that Yucca root herbal extract decreased symptoms of both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Yucca root contains the minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, and zinc; as well as vitamins B1, B2, B3 and C. Yucca extract also contains the phytochemicals beta-carotene, resveratrol, sarsasapogenin, and tannins which may prevent free radical-induced damage in the body and thereby help to prevent and treat this disease in humans. Burdock, Arctium lappa, contains carbohydrates and fatty oils, as well as sterols and tannins, which are natural compounds with anti-inflammatory qualities.
Some studies support the benefits of using
Burdock root tincture in the management of arthritic pain. Burdock root extract has shown analgesic and antioxidant activity as well, and it is a diuretic. Historically, Burdock root was used as a nutritional supplement to strengthen the body. It is commonly used today to remove excess fluids from swollen tissues during a gout attack. Due to Burdock root's abilities to clean the bloodstream of toxins, promote the excretion of urine and reduce inflammation, it has become a prominent remedy for arthritis in herbal medicine. According to The Science Principles and Practices of Herbal Medicine, Burdock root extracts remain an effective herbal remedy to reduce the symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis.
Buckthorn bark, Rhamnus frangula, has a diuretic action that flushes the kidneys of toxins through the urine, which increases health and well-being. Buckthorn bark extract has been used in the treatment of skin diseases, as a detoxifier and it contains moderate amounts of calcium, phosphorus, and potassium.
Alfalfa leaf extract, Medicago sativa, has been used as a remedy for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Alfalfa is a great source of vitamins A, B-complex, C, E and K and has been traditionally used to alleviate various acute and chronic inflammatory symptoms associated with degeneration and aging. The high levels of minerals and proteins in the plant might be able to ease inflammation of injured bodily tissues.
Parsley, Petroselinum
sativum, is considered a strong diuretic. Being rich in antioxidants, like vitamin C, beta-carotene and folic acid and a wide array of minerals. Parsley leaf extract is beneficial for protecting the body from the attack of free radicals, thereby preventing numerous disease. The high vitamin C content in Parsley is also said to be beneficial for protecting the human body against osteoarthritis and some forms of rheumatoid arthritis, like inflammatory polyarthritis. It is a good source of vitamin K that is beneficial for the bones.
Slippery Elm bark, Ulmus
fulva also known as Ulmus rubra, reduces inflammation and is useful for soothing the mucous membranes of the urinary tract, reducing swelling, easing inflammation of aching joints and healing damaged tissues.
Yarrow flower, Achillea millefolium, is most frequently call Lady's Mantle, but it is an entirely different plant with different applications. The volatile oil of Yarrow, which is rich in sesquiterpene lactones and
alkamides, salicylic acid, cyanidin, and azulene, is believed to have strong anti-inflammatory properties. This may account for the use of Yarrow flower tincture in treating rheumatism.
Cayenne, Capsicum
annuum, is used often used as a pain-killer and is one of the most useful herbal remedies for pain relief and for treating rheumatism. The capsicum is the principal active ingredient and is shown to be very effective for easing pain caused by arthritis and nerve conditions. When Cayenne is taken on a regular basis, the fiery capsicum does several things; it blocks the supply of NGF (nerve growth factor) helps produce a hormone known as substance P (SP), which transmits all pain signals throughout the body to the brain quickly. It causes a massive release of SP from the hypothalamus, which at first may increase arthritic pain but later diminishes quite a bit. By producing this depletion, pain signals no longer are able to get to the brain. The first noticeable result is the feeling of no pain in those with arthritis. As an added bonus, the cayenne pepper is said to boost the production of endorphins, the natural pain-killers produced by the body after exercise. Capsaicin also benefits people with fibromyalgia and studies have found that topical application in a cream resulted in a noticeable reduction in pain as well as improve grip strength.
Devil's claw, Harpagophytum
procumbens, is widely used by herbalists to treat arthritis. Its anti-inflammatory properties are said to give it the ability to ease aches and stiffness in joints as well as relieve pain. A study in France that compared Devil's claw to a prescription medication for arthritis showed that both the herb and the prescription drug had a similar pain-relieving effect. However, significantly fewer side effects from Devil's claw were reported. Devil's claw herbal extract remains a popular herbal remedy for treating arthritis and is approved by the German Commission E for treating rheumatoid arthritis, back, knee and hip pain. It is also used to treat a number of ailments including osteoarthritis, gout, bursitis, tendonitis and soft tissue pain (muscle aches). Devil's claw herbal tinctures can be an alternative medicine for those taking over-the-counter pain medications such as Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen, which can cause liver and stomach problems. Devil's claw can be a much healthier approach to treating joint pain. These liquid herbal extracts are made even more potent in combination form.
