This herbal formula exerts a strong stimulating action that is most pronounced on the lungs and is said to be a great expectorant that loosens and expels mucus and phlegm from the respiratory system and relieves chest congestion, asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, chest colds, coughs and many other conditions where there is excessive mucus to be expelled from the body. Up to 95 percent of cases of acute bronchitis are caused by viral infection, with most of the rest caused by environmental irritants. The most common viral causes are influenza, parainfluenza, and the common cold viruses. Unfortunately, in many cases, antibiotics are prescribed, making it one of the leading situations in which antibiotics are sometimes misused. Accordingly, the American College of Physicians and U.S. Centers for Disease Control have issued guidelines aimed at stopping the physicians from automatically prescribing antibiotics to patients with acute bronchitis. According to these two organizations, the only form of bronchitis that should be treated with antibiotics is pertussis (whooping cough).
Elderberry, Sambucus nigra, also called elderflower, was once referred to as "nature's medicine chest". Elderberry is a natural remedy with three flavonoids that have antiviral properties. Flavonoids can be very effective against different strains of viruses. Elderberry herbal extract also has other compounds, called anthocyanins, which have an anti-inflammatory effect, thus reducing pain. Elderberry may be effective in treating some diseases related to a depressed immune system, and preliminary studies have shown some promise against some viruses. Elderberry is one of the most effective herbs for preventing and treating upper respiratory infections. Studies have shown that Elderberry herbal tincture reduces excessive sinus mucus secretion, and some studies also suggest that it can help lessen swelling in the mucous membranes, improve sinus drainage, and decrease congestion. It is anti-inflammatory and anti-catarrhal. This gentle herb is used for bronchitis, catarrh, asthma, common cold symptoms including coughs and sore throats, fevers and viruses.
Pleurisy root, Asclepias tuberosa, is an expectorant for dry coughs and thick mucus and it loosens phlegm. The pleurisy root herbal extract has a specific action on the pulmonary and respiratory system, and it is said to help break up colds, ease consumption, bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, dry cough, clogged nasal passages, catarrhal affections of the lungs and throat and practically all bronchial complaints. Pleurisy root tincture helps retain the health of the lining of the lungs and airways (bronchial tubes), supports a relaxation of the bronchial muscles, and helps maintain an ideal amount of mucus in the mucous membranes. It contains key flavonoids, such as rutin, kaempferol, quercetin, and isorhamnetin, as well as compounds known as cardenolides.
White Pine Bark, Pinus strobus, also known as pygenol and Pycnogenol is made from the bark of maritime pine tree, which contains naturally occurring chemicals called proanthocyanidins which have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Pine bark is used for its ability to block the action of free radicals and some claim that it is more effective in eliminating free radicals than vitamins C and E. Pine bark extract is much used by native American Indians for both food and medicine, the resin is used for sore throats and as an expectorant. In herbalism is used to energize the body and overcome fevers, infections, and stagnation. The decoction is useful in the treatment of respiratory complaints, colds, and fever. The University of Maryland Medical Center adds that it may help to improve lung function in asthma patients and suggest its use can alleviate asthma symptoms. An article published in April 2002 issue of "International Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics," notes that pycnogenol may decrease asthma symptom scores and levels of circulating leukotrienes, molecules that cause inflammation. As such, Pycnogenol may be a valuable nutraceutical in the management of chronic asthma.
Wild Cherry, Prunus serotina, may be beneficial in the treatment of ailments and conditions involving the lungs. Wild Cherry Bark contains the phytochemical hydrocyanic acid which helps to cleanse the lungs and enhances lymphatic system function. Wild Cherry Bark extract is often used to treat chest congestion as it helps loosen mucus by helping your respiratory tissues to relax. Known as a stimulating expectorant, Wild Cherry Bark stimulates the upper digestive tract as well as the nervous system. This allows mucus to be dislodged from the chest more easily. The extract of cherry bark has a long history of being used to treat persistent coughs and has been especially useful in the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, laryngitis, colds and whooping cough.
Horehound, Marrubium vulgaris, is a perennial herb that belongs to the mint family and is used worldwide by Ayurvedic practitioners for its respiratory properties. Horehound is a bitter herb and useful for the treatment of ailments such as asthma, bronchitis, coughing, colds, tuberculosis, sore throats, hoarseness and laryngitis with the loss of voice and as a stomach tonic, according to Purdue University. Because the active components are volatile, the herbs are found to be useful as an expectorant, loosening chest congestion and helping to bring up trapped mucus. Not only does Horehound have expectorant properties, but it also has properties of being a sedative and antispasmodic. These added properties, therefore ease the coughing and help to calm it. The anti-inflammatory properties of Horehound herbal extract may help to soothe the airways of the lungs and promote easier expulsion of mucus.

The root is used in herbal medicine, and it's chemical constituents helenalin, helenin, and inulin are shown to have expectorant and antiseptic properties that support its traditional uses. Elecampane herbal extract is also a bitter tonic that tones the digestive system. Elecampane is a beneficial lung tonic as well, as it is both cleansing and strengthening of the lungs. Not only an expectorant, Elecampane also has antibacterial, antifungal and antiparasitic activities, making it especially beneficial for treating respiratory infections. Using this decoction made from the root, Elecampane combines well with these other respiratory herbs for both relief from acute symptoms or for a general strengthening lung tonic.
Marshmallow, Althea officinalis, has strong anti-inflammatory as well as expectorant qualities. Marshmallow root extract is excellent for soothing irritated tissue, and it relieves various forms of inflammation, especially of the mucous membranes, since it is rich in mucilage, which is very soothing. It also aids the body in expelling excess fluid and mucus. This herbal remedy is used in many lung preparations and cough syrups to alleviate a dry, hacking cough, whooping cough, sore throat, and laryngitis. As a cough suppressant, Marshmallow soothes the membranes, frequently preventing cough. Infusions from the leaves or herbal decoctions made from the roots are used to reduce the severity of dry, unproductive coughs and soothe inflamed and irritated lungs. It works well in combination with the other expectorants in this formula.
Slippery Elm, Ulmus rubra, has been used as an herbal remedy in North America for centuries. Slippery Elm can help heal problems in the pulmonary areas of the body as a sore throat, coughs, bleeding from the lungs and other lung problems.
