Many aspects of modern life, but not just overindulgence, may lead to indigestion. Most of us are rushing around, wearing restrictive clothing, eating rich foods, and eating irregularly. This lifestyle can lead to heartburn, which may be accompanied by flatulence, nausea, and pain in the chest. Most people reach for antacids, or other OTC medication for indigestion, the symptoms usually return with the next meal, or stressor. Antacids only temporarily reduce stomach acids, but ultimately they result in the stomach producing more acid in an effort to restore balance to the system. Thankfully the world of herbs contains a lot of different ways to soothe the burning, bloated feeling that can come with indigestion. These herbs usually fall into one of three broad categories: Bitters (which stimulate), demulcents (which soothe) and carminatives (which help relieve gas).
Peppermint leaf, Mentha piperita, is one of the most popular herbs for relaxing the gut, which is why it is so helpful in cases of irritable bowel syndrome, IBS, for the relief of both nausea and gas, with an antimicrobial action. The herb has also been used by some for vomiting, morning sickness, cramps of the upper gastrointestinal tract and bile ducts, heartburn, bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine, gas, and diarrhea. Also, some doctors use Peppermint leaf extracts for relaxing the colon during barium enemas. Studies suggest that compounds in the Peppermint herb actually activate an anti-pain channel in the colon. This channel may reduce the pain linked with eating some spicy foods, as well.
Fennel seed is a perennial herb that is also classified as a vegetable and has been shown to improve stomach function by balancing the body's pH. Fennel, Foeniculum vulgare, is a carminative, or wind-relieving herb that may be helpful in calming an upset stomach. Fennel blends well with Peppermint leaf for the cramping in people with indigestion.
Catnip leaf, Nepeta cataria, is a natural antacid with powerful effects, so it has been used for acid reflux and stomach distress. Additionally, it helps to relax the mind, while it fights off the acids. It has antibacterial, anti-fungal, stomachic, antispasmodic, and muscle relaxing properties that are found to be useful for stomachaches, colic, diarrhea, flatulence, hiccups, sleeplessness and headache, and it is considered to be safe for children. With its calming and stress relieving properties, it may also help ease menstrual cramps, restlessness, and nervousness.
Lobelia leaf, Lobelia inflata, contains an alkaloid called lobeline, which relaxes muscles. The actions of the herb are antispasmodic and relaxing to the body. This can be helpful for easing any kind of cramping pain, including intestinal gripe, and menstrual cramps. Lobelia has also been used to rid the body of heavy metals. It seems to help counteract poisons in general. It is also believed to stimulate and depress the autonomic nervous system and has been referred to as "the intelligent herb" because it seems to go to wherever it is needed to promote healing in the body.
Cayenne pepper extracts can provide relief from acid reflux. This type of pepper is more commonly used as a spice, and it has a stinging sharpness. But contrary to what people believe of the spice, it is an excellent aid for proper digestion. Cayenne has antiseptic properties and is also considered to be a stimulant and a catalyst for all other herbs. It contains high amounts of beta-carotene and vitamin C. This herbal tincture has also been used to strengthen arteries, nerves, and heart by regulating blood flow. So, aside from easing heartburn pain, you can also reap other health benefits as well.
