Arnica is useful in cases of trauma whether it be physical or emotional. Externally, it can be rubbed on bruises, muscular pains, and sprains. It can be applied to sore, stiff joints that have been overworked from repetitive stress or excessive strain, or the pain associated with rheumatism and arthritis.
Wormwood works like a natural anesthetic and it is good for the relief of pain associated with broken bones, arthritic joints, sprains and muscle soreness. The tincture of Wormwood is wonderful in a topical application for bruises, swellings, lower back pain, neuralgia, arthritis and local inflammation. Wormwood extracts can be used in linaments, salves, poultices, compresses, to treat bruises, insect bites and stings, and can also be made into a wash to get rid of lice and scabies and to soothe itchy skin. Wormwood is an invigorating, aromatic herb that has antiseptic qualities, as well.
Marshmallow is used in this infusion, and like Slippery Elm Bark, it works well for soothing any and all inflammations. A soothing mucilaginous herb, Marshmallow, that has been used in poultices and is particularly valuable for burns, to soothe irritated skin, insect bites, eczema, and psoriasis. It may be used externally in an ointment as an emollient to soften and soothe dry skin and hands. The high mucilage content will promote rapid healing of skin ulcers, sunburns, boils, or other bodily abscesses, and diaper rash.
Prunella vulgaris, or Self-Heal, is also known as all-heal and reputed to help in the treatment of skin wounds and infections as well as other injuries and bruises. The known ingredients will certainly have an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect, but there may be other components of this herb that help to explain the impact it has on swellings, hypertension and other disorders. The anti-inflammatory action of Self-heal has been used in this formulation made of extracts for its effective treatment of wounds, burns, cuts, rashes, sprains and other injuries. It has anti-tumor properties that awaken healing and that helps stop bleeding. It is a restorative and regenerative herb and has been used as a facial skin moisturizer and a general body cream.
As a topical remedy, Lobelia is most effective in a tincture for reducing muscle spasms, especially in the smooth muscles of the body. Herbal medicine can utilize a variety of combinations. With the other herbs contained in the formula, it is added to help relieve various sprains, back problems, bruises, whiplash, superficial phlebitis and joint lumps with rheumatoid arthritis. It has been used in compresses to increase the effectiveness of interferon treatment of herpes simplex virus. In cases studied, duration of skin toxicity was reduced, from an average of 26 days to 16-17 days with its use. Green tea also protects the skin from the harmful effects of free radicals, and sun damage, that can lead to wrinkles. Better than benzocaine compresses made from Green tea reduce the swelling of minor burns, such as sunburn and relieves ear infections and eczema.
